Paris, 17th June 2010
Anevia, a leader in video streaming solutions and service infrastructure for live TV and video on demand (VOD), and the Integrated Communication Research Centre (ICRC), a new IPTV technology laboratory and research centre based at the University of Glamorgan, today announced the launch of MediaShare, an innovative, feature-rich set-top box that aims to revolutionize the TV viewing experience.
Most set-top boxes available in the market today support only one way communication. The consumer can only watch scheduled television programmes and videos on demand. The ICRC, a specialist in Next Generation Networks such as IMS, has developed a new set-top box, called MediaShare, which enables viewers to watch TV and multimedia content in a different way. Anevia, a specialist in IPTV solutions, has accompanied the project providing head-end technologies.
MediaShare is based on the principle of connect and share, anywhere and everywhere. The set-top box not only delivers live TV channels and videos on demand, but it also connects directly to the Internet, giving subscribers access to all their favourite web services. They can exchange information with family and friends from the comfort of their armchair. An innovative television remote control serves not only to select TV programmes and videos, but turns over to provide a keyboard and joystick.
“People no longer just watch TV or surf the Net or watch videos; they do all these things and more, switching from one to another as they feel like it. So we wanted to take away the technical barriers and simplify the subscriber experience by delivering the full range of services on one set-top box,” stated Professor Khalid Al-Begain, Director of ICRC. “To complete the project, which is led by Dr. Alhad Kuwadekar, we needed advanced head-end technologies for the conversion of digital TV channels so we could transmit them over an IP network. Anevia was the obvious partner – they are strong in innovation but also have proven technologies. Their contribution to the MediaShare project has been invaluable and enabled us to create an outstanding product.”
“We are delighted to have participated in this pioneering project. It has been a very enriching experience,” stated Bernard Van Hoorn, Southern & Northern Europe Area Director at Anevia. “The ICRC also works with Orange and other major companies and there is a highly creative atmosphere at the research centre. The determination to change the way people experience and interact with multimedia is their driving force. MediaShare is just the beginning of many innovations.”
About The Integrated Communication Research Centre (ICRC)
The Integrated Communication Research Centre (ICRC) was established in 2006. It comprises three research units; the Mobile Computing and Networking Research Unit, the Broadband Communications RU and the Satellite Communications Research Group. The main objective of the ICRC is the consolidation of the research and development work to combine the first class expertise in these fields with extended research themes and capabilities in the Faculty of Advanced Technology. The research themes of ICRC are all focused on Next Generation (NG) communications networks and services. Research projects span over the whole network protocol stack – from mobile applications through the network layer stack to broadband wireless communication systems and radio propagation studies. The Centre thus brings together relevant research on mobile computing, optical communications and Laser technology and wireless communications to form an overall comprehensive framework for research and development in the field.
ICRC has distinguished research facilities including the unique IP Multimedia Subsystem (IMS) Next Generation Wireless Application and Service Creation lab (the only one of its type in a European university). This enjoys full sponsorship from major companies, including France Telecom (providing IMS platform worth approximately £200k) and Orange (providing an indoor 3G Node B worth £250k). The Centre is at the verge of securing £5million funding for expanding its activities into next generation applications and services.
