New Solution from Anevia Raises Performance of OTT Video Services While Optimizing Operational Costs

Anevia has launched an OTT solution that selects the quality of content streams to match available Internet bandwidth, ensuring smooth service delivery and an improved viewing experience. The multi-protocol OTT server can converge multiple streaming services (IPTV, mobile TV) on the same platform to optimize operational costs.

Paris 3rd September 2010

Anevia, a leader in video streaming solutions and service infrastructure for live TV and video on demand (VOD), today announced that it has developed an OTT streaming solution that consistently adjusts services to bandwidth availability, enabling over-the-top (OTT) service providers to deliver higher quality video content.

OTT services use open networks, such as the Internet, to reach subscribers. These networks can give service providers access to a potentially massive and worldwide audience. However, bandwidths often fluctuate according to network traffic, geographic location and user equipment. This limits the success of certain services, such as IPTV and video on demand, because of the inability to deliver content of consistent quality.

In response to this problem, Anevia has developed a solution that automatically and consistently selects the best video stream quality to match the available network bandwidth, thereby ensuring fluid content delivery and a superior viewing experience.

Additional services, such as IPTV streaming (TS) and mobile streaming (RTP), can be integrated with the OTT services on the same carrier grade platform, for a fully converged, redundant and highly cost effective solution that optimizes investment and operational costs.

The Anevia solution is composed of a central server, which manages the VOD and live streams, connected to a cloud network of caching servers. Services can be delivered to both fixed and mobile devices (TVs, set-top-boxes, PCs, mobile phones, iPhones, tablets…). Monitoring and management applications ensure service quality and reliability.

The OTT solution uses the http live streaming protocol, developed by Apple®, as well as other commonly used protocols such as Microsoft Silverlight®, Google WebM and HTML5. It addresses 2 main markets:

  • Operators who wish to extend their coverage to users outside the reach of their managed networks. They already have a strong content base and can develop very specific video service packages for targeted markets.
  • Service providers who wish to deliver video services independently from the operators. They can include service providers with new or differentiating services (such as Internet or community service providers), or companies who already have a significant library of content (such as satellite service providers), but wish to extend coverage beyond their existing subscriber range.

“Increased Internet bandwidth has opened up a whole new world of possibilities for video services. Video content can now be streamed and received anywhere on the planet – irrespective of where the content is created or viewed – giving complete freedom to OTT service providers,” comments Damien Lucas, VP of Strategic Projects and Co-founder of Anevia. “Until now, the major problem for these providers was delivering services of acceptable and stable quality. Following the launch of Anevia’s OTT streaming solution, service quality can be assured.”
