Overview
The ViaPlanner solution is a content distribution manager (CDN). It manages content delivery when IPTV video services are extended to additional devices such as PCs or mobile phones.
ViaPlanner is responsible for network asset optimization, ensuring that high quality services and multiple content packages are delivered to all devices at all times.

The ViaPlanner carries out 2 main functions:
Storage Distribution
There is a point when a content catalogue becomes so large that it is too expensive to stock all the films on each server. In this case, it is necessary to divide the catalogue over a number of servers.
The ViaPlanner distributes content among the available servers storing duplicates of the most popular content on the largest number of servers (the “edge servers”) while the complete content library is only stocked on central servers. In this way, costs are optimized without compromising on service quality.
Geographical Distribution and Content Management
Rules for content duplication must be dynamic. The ViaPlanner distributes content among multiple servers according to different criteria, including popularity (dynamic) and time of day (since content popularity varies at different times of the day). The ViaPlanner then manages the content according to these criteria in order to deliver the highest quality of service at all times.
